Compulsory ECG’s for UK athletes, too?

Interesting article in the British Medical Journal regarding the mass ECG screening programme of athletes in Italy – currently the only country to implement this by law.
 
Whilst it is evident that the accuracy of ECG screening varies and some heart conditions are likely to remain undetected, as argued by Dr Roald Bahr, the argument that screening hundreds and thousands of athletes to save possibly one life a year cannot be justified could probably be challenged by the huge number of athletes who are striving to bring sporting glory to their country…

Pine-bark extract doesn’t lower blood pressure

Pine-bark extract has been found not to have any effect in lowering blood pressure or reducing heart disease risk factors, according to a study by Stanford University in the USA.
 
These findings support the growing body of evidence that many dietary supplements don’t have the the scientific and clinical data to back up the health benefit claims.
 
However, the study did conclude that a different dosage or formulation of pine-bark extract might well have produced a different result, so it will be interesting to see any further research into pinebark extract and other antioxidants.
